Congratulations to Zeph Capo on First Day at Work as Texas AFT President

Congratulations to Zeph Capo, who was recently elected President of the Texas American Federation of Teachers at the union's convention. Capo began work at the union yesterday.

Capo developed a legacy of activism as President of the Houston Federation of Teachers. We look forward to working with Brother Capo and, as always, with the union that sets an amazing leadership standard for the state federation's education policy.

We also offer our profound thanks to Louis Malfaro, who as Texas AFT President continued a tradition of outstanding organizing that dates to the formation of the union in 1974.

Capo posted this letter to his membership:

Dear AFT Brothers and Sisters,

Today marks my first day as President of Texas AFT, and I wanted to send you a quick note. More than anything, I just want to say thank you. Thank you for trusting me to lead our organization over the next two years, representing thousands of teachers and support professionals. I firmly believe the people who fight hard for our kids deserve a union that will fight equally hard for them and their families.

Together, we are going to be seen and heard in school board meetings across the state. We will fight against harmful legislation and promote public education in the halls of Austin. Together, we will fight and together we will win. Remarkable results depend on remarkable engagement with your union. I look forward to hearing how you will help us achieve our shared goals.

In the coming weeks and months, I will be traveling across our great state to meet with you and learn your thoughts on how to move our organization forward. Together, we will build upon the foundation of our past to create the future our members and our students deserve. The success of our members and our students depends on our collaboration, dedication, and our commitment to the mission.

I'm looking forward to a successful term as your President and as your union brother. Thank you for everything you've done and continue to do to move us forward, together. My door is always open, and my team and I are ready to assist you.

In Solidarity,

Zeph Capo
