Texas AFL-CIO Endorses Transport Workers Rally For Safety in Airplane Maintenance

‘Keep American Airlines American!’

The Texas AFL-CIO today endorsed planned rallies led by Transport Workers Union Local 513 for airplane safety and security amid proposals by American Airlines to outsource maintenance jobs to low bidders in Mexico, South America and China.

The events are set for 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 3 p.m.-5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23, at DFW International Airport, Terminal D.

“The flying public in the U.S. has flown millions of miles safely on American Airlines because of the unsung work of the mechanics of the Transport Workers Union,” Texas AFL-CIO President Rick Levy said. “American Airlines is now taking a position in contract talks that will jeopardize that safety record.”

“Despite billions of dollars in profits, American Airlines apparently wants to squeeze even more out of airline workers as if they were just another inch of aircraft leg space,” Levy said. “Really? Airline safety? Is there no line corporate greed won’t cross? TWU 513 is standing up and saying ‘No!’ to outsourcing airplane maintenance to low-wage venues with unproven safety records, and we proudly stand with them.”

“This fight extends beyond American Airlines, as we see workers across Texas and America speaking up together to demand fairness on the job, and that benefits us all. The Texas AFL-CIO calls on American Airlines to bargain in good faith with TWU and negotiate a contract that serves working families and the flying public.”
