Statement on Senate Bill 14

Texas AFL-CIO President Rick Levy posted this statement on Senate Bill 14.

“Senate Bill 14 will make it harder for Texas cities and counties to pass local policies to protect workers and improve working conditions.”

“But the version of SB 14 that passed today is vastly improved. We were able to protect local ability to require rest breaks and water breaks on the job, to remove barriers to employment for formerly incarcerated individuals who have paid their debt to society, and to fight discrimination, in part by enacting local versions of the CROWN Act – an important tool to prevent employment discrimination based on race.”

“Although the Texas AFL-CIO cannot support SB 14 because other provisions of the bill prevent local leaders from passing policies to encourage fair workplace scheduling and expanded family leave, we thank our members, community allies and legislative champions who worked to improve this proposal.”
