Job Opening: Digital Strategist

The Texas AFL-CIO is a statewide labor federation and serves as the leading voice for working families in Texas. We are looking for a talented Digital Organizer/Strategist to join our team.

Our goal is to have a cutting edge, innovative and effective digital campaign operation and we are looking for a creative and strategic thinker interested in being an integral part of our communications, organizing and political programs.

The Digital Organizer/Strategist will be responsible for working with State Federation leaders and staff to create and implement e-mail, social and other digital media strategy for organizing, legislative and political campaigns.

Responsibilities

  • Designing, executing and tracking email, social and other digital media tactics for organizing, legislative and political campaigns. 
  • Researching, writing, and editing dynamic and effective online mobilization communications with e-mail, text messaging, video and other online communications tools. 
  • Setting up and sending content through the Action Network CRM and other online tools.
  • Working closely with a variety of Texas AFL-CIO departments, affiliates, and Central Labor Councils on the identification and execution of digital components to our political, issue organizing and legislative programs. 
  • Lead on graphic intensive projects for print and digital 
  • Oversee digital components to annual union conventions, rallies and special projects 
  • Help to develop a strategy for integrating online and offline activism across program areas. 
  • Tracking and analyzing campaign metrics and using that data to come up with new tactics to keep our program on the cutting-edge.
  • Outreach and promotion of AFL-CIO affiliate campaigns to bloggers and other digital outlets.
  • Researching and recommending emerging digital technologies and channels. 
  • Train and be a resource for affiliated and allied state and local organizations on online organizing, communications, best practices and tools, and work closely with them to determine how our department can support their campaign work.
  • Implement and amplify Texas AFL-CIO branding guidelines on social media and internal staff.
  • Act as liaison with vendors who manage and run our campaign tools, including Action Network, Mobile Commons, ActionSprout, and ShareProgress. 
  • Oversee strategies to continue to grow our email and SMS lists. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

  • Strong background in or strong familiarity with the labor movement, movements for progressive social change and political or issue campaigns, and an understanding of issues facing unions members and working families. 
  • Proven digital campaigning experience (labor, political, or other activism) with demonstrated experience in email or web copywriting. 
  • Interest and curiosity in seeking how to tell stories that move people, and keeping up with the best practices in doing so. 
  • Experience with social media management with a special focus on creating and growing communities on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok.
  • Proven experience designing, executing and tracking successful e-mail, SMS, social and other online advocacy programs. 
  • Strong editorial and writing ability, including the ability to quickly turn around compelling copy in an authentic voice that resonates with our audiences. 
  • Creative ideas for mobilizing members and integrating online and offline activism. 
  • Experience with Canva or Adobe Illustrator for graphic design. 
  • Experience with Constituent Relationship Management systems (i.e. Action Network, Mailchimp, Constant Contact, Action Kit).
  • Advanced knowledge of the latest online tools and emerging technologies. 
  • Excellent time-management and organizational skills. Must be able to multitask and prioritize. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively, yet independently within the context of a plan. 
  • Excellent communication skills. 
  • Ability to work long and extended hours when needed, and willingness to engage in some travel as required. 

The job is covered by the collective bargaining agreement in our workplace with OPEIU 277, and the salary for this position is $53,270, but in special cases can be adjusted depending on experience and qualifications, and carries a very competitive benefits package.
