The Texas AFL-CIO – a state labor federation that advocates for working families across Texas through its 240,000 affiliated union members -- is looking for a digital intern with imagination, smarts, energy, grit, and the skills and drive to help the labor movement build power.  

We encourage college students, women and people of color to apply. Social justice activists with experience or study in marketing, journalism or communications may be particularly suited to the job. 

  • We ask for a commitment of 15-20 hours a week, but we’re reasonably flexible about scheduling. Pay is $15 per hour.
  • We expect and encourage interns to experiment with digital products and complete at least one digital long-term project, conceived by the intern. (e.g., digital storytelling)
  • Help manage social media and weekly newsletters with the assistance of the Communications Director and Digital Strategist. 
  • Help monitor traffic and consider growth strategies. Monitor social media and news outlets for breaking news and opportunities
  • Help create content – both digital and print. (e.g., social media graphics and flyers for our field organizers and Central Labor Councils) 
  • Think outside the box using the tools at our disposal for digital organizing/activism

Preference given for these skills:

  • Familiarity with digital and social media platforms and a sense of excitement around innovations in digital communication, mobilization, and organizing
  • Management of Facebook and Twitter LIVE under the direction of staff 
  • Adobe Creative Suite, Canva or other graphic design tools
  • Camera proficient 
  • Familiarity with SMS texting campaigns
  • Comfortable under deadline pressure

Job Opening - Organizer

 The Texas AFL-CIO is a statewide labor federation and serves as the leading voice for working families in Texas.  The Texas AFL-CIO is seeking a dedicated and innovative organizer to work with elected leadership, staff and affiliates to build a bigger, broader and more powerful labor movement in the state of Texas. We are looking for someone who wants to make a difference in our movement and in our state through organizing, legislative, political and campaign activities.

Responsibilities include:

  • Work creatively and with purpose every day to build a bigger, bolder and broader labor movement in the state of Texas.
  • Identify, recruit and manage volunteers and coordinate resources in targeted areas for organizational, political and legislative mobilization.
  • Work with the elected leadership and Campaigns Director to design and carry out election campaign plans in targeted areas.
  • Organize and carry out membership mobilization for political action campaigns, including block walks, phone banks, and earned media activities on behalf of endorsed candidates and issues in elections.
  • Work with member lists and manage voter contacts and voter IDs
  • Work with elected leadership and affiliates to identify leaders and resources to build organizational capacity in key targeted areas.
  • Support the work of YALL (Young Active Labor Leaders) to create space and opportunity for young workers in the movement.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Applicants must have demonstrated strong commitment to the goals and mission of the labor movement. Position is based in Austin but will require travel in Texas. We have a vibrant, supportive workplace that is attentive to the needs of those who work here, however, it is not an easy job, and willingness to at times work long, irregular hours and some weekends is important. Reliable transportation is required. Must also possess organizational skills, be able to work independently, and yet, function effectively as part of a coordinated team.  Computer literacy in the context of campaign work is important. Experience with unions, organizing, volunteer coordination, and/or campaign field work is a must.

Bilingual capacity is looked upon with great favor.

This position is funded pursuant to a solidarity grant and is for a period of one year. It is our hope and intention to continue past that time, but we are unable to guarantee that. Very competitive salary and benefits package.
