Dreamers Win Big in Ruling That Repudiates Abbott and Paxton, Along With Trump

Texas AFL-CIO President Rick Levy and Secretary-Treasurer Montserrat Garibay issued this statement today on the U.S. Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision reversing President Trump’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) order issued by President Obama:

“Today’s Supreme Court decision elevates the hopes of Dreamers who are making a difference and helping build a better future for Texas. The ruling also shines a bright light on just how wrong a path Gov. Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton have set out for Texas.”

“Let’s not forget that it was Abbott and Paxton, after leading passage of the racist ‘Show Me Your Papers’ law (SB 4), who positioned Texas as the leader in seeking to take down DACA. If Abbott and Paxton had prevailed, hundreds of thousands of Dreamers who have known no other home would have been at risk of deportation, of being separated from their families and of losing their jobs — all in the middle of a pandemic.”

“The court majority called the White House action ‘arbitrary and capricious’ in how it sought to dismantle DACA, but outside the technical legal language, the move took direct aim at fundamental fairness. Today’s ruling strikes a blow against an intentional effort to divide Americans and divide Texans from one another.”

“Dreamers won today, but the DACA ruling is only a temporary reprieve. Congress still needs to pass comprehensive immigration reform that gives Dreamers and other immigrants a path to citizenship. To accomplish that goal, the people must speak. DACA’s detractors will go back to the drawing board. The Texas AFL-CIO will continue to stand with our DACAmented members to battle for justice for immigrant communities. How the next steps play out will be determined by how all of us continue to organize and how voters join together at the polls in the most important election of our lives.”
