The national labor communicator’s meeting on December 15 emphasized the need for more and better labor outreach as we face the challenges of 2021. The immediate need is to win two U.S. Senate seats in Georgia on January 5. National staffer Kalina Newman said that the race is “neck and neck.”
The Texas AFL-CIO is leading a major effort, including phone banking at 10 AM on Saturday, December 19.
Texas retirees will urge eligible voters to continue our great gains in vote-by-mail. Applications can be filed January 1 to cover all 2021 elections.
Further challenges will come in mid-January when the Texas Legislature convenes. Texas AFL-CIO President Rick Levy writes, “In the 87th session of the Texas Legislature, the Texas AFL-CIO will fight for a fair shot for all working families to get ahead. It’s what we do, and it’s always a steep uphill climb. This time, as the longest declared disaster in our state’s history lays waste to day-to-day assumptions, worker power takes on new meaning.”
Dallas Plans Ahead
The Secretary-Treasurer and the President of the Dallas AFL-CIO are calling for volunteers to help with budgeting and strategic planning early in January. To meet the challenges, our annual December 17 Christmas partybecame a fund-raiser led by Travis Cantwell, Ray Edmondson, and Kym Grant. Greetings came from state and local labor activists. $1,500 was raised while unionists celebrated our 2020 work and prepared for next year.
