Last Day for Early Voting

Early voting closes at 7PM today, July 10. The final runoff election date is July 14, 7AM to 7PM. Polling locations and other information are at http://dallascountyvotes.org.

The Dallas newspaper reported that 800,000 Texans had voted by July 12. 60% were Democrats and 40% were Republican. Travis County had exceeded both Harris and Dallas counties in percentage turnout.

National Strike Day Is July 20

The Associated Press reported that unions and other organizations were calling for nationwide strikes lasting from 8 minutes to all day. #StrikeforBlackLives has information on http://seiu.org indicating that the SEIU Service Employees, IBT Teamsters, and AFT School Employees were leading the coalition.

AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka today announced the creation of the AFL-CIO Task Force on Racial Justice. He said, “The labor movement is committed to being the tip of the spear in the fight to bring long overdue racial justice to our country!”

So far, Houston has the only Texas action listed. North Texans interested in taking part may contact genelantz.dallasaflcio@gmail.com.

How Should Schools Open?

The American Federation of Teachers is leading the fight for safety even as the Education Commissioner and the President of the United States press for reopening schools regardless. Dallas schools are scheduled to open on August 17, but Superintendent Hinojosa has expressed reservations.

The President’s threat of withholding federal funds is challenging the decisions of all educational institutions.

The AFL-CIO Continues to Increase On-Line Outreach

KNON’s “Workers Beat” is no longer the only labor-oriented radio program in the South now that WBNN in Alabama has a program. Labor’s audio communicators gather on-line weekly to improve labor’s efforts and to help one another. Broadcasts and podcasts are updated weekly on https://www.laborradionetwork.org.

“Workers Beat” is live at 9AM every Saturday on http://knon.org. The program and locally-produced labor podcasts are on http://soundcloud.com.
