George Rangel, a titan of leadership for the school employees’ union, Alliance/AFT, and for the Dallas AFL-CIO, is shifting into retiree mode. Rangel helped guide Dallas school employees through treacherous waters for decades. He served as President of the Dallas AFl-CIO. He was listened to carefully as he wisely guided the labor movement. Rangel was the main architect of the Dallas AFL-CIO Constitution.

George Rangel is much more than a union administrator. He is also on the cutting edge of labor progressivism. It was Rangel who masterminded and carried out our program to help undocumented immigrant workers achieve citizenship. He has always been there for Dallas area workers and, thank goodness, he isn’t gone. He’s only retiring.

Lamentably, though, the Texas Alliance for Retired Americans has lost its long-time volunteer treasurer, Elaine Jones of the Coastal Bend area. A memorial service in Corpus Christi and statewide tributes are being prepared.  All mail must go to Box 225091, Dallas, TX, 75222-5091.

Labor Reaches Further

The Dallas AFL-CIO plans to fill two part-time positions: During this red-hot political season, we will receive some backing from National AFL-CIO. We're looking for a two-person part-time political team. The main person would receive $25/hour for up to 20 hours/week from May through December. The second person would receive $15/hour for the same hours. Contact lluckhardt.dallasaflcio@gmail.com by April 26.

Dallas reaches out to all with our free International Workers Day celebration beginning 2 PM on May 4th at the APWU Hall, 2010 Postal Way. Sponsorships begin at $150. Contact jtomlinson.dallasaflcio@gmail.com soon.

Texas AFL-CIO is looking for a full-time organizer for the Rio Grande Valley. For full details, go to this link: https://tinyurl.com/29yxr3hp.

The Texas Alliance for Retired Americans is attempting to go far beyond the major metropolitan centers where we already have chapters. We will boost retiree meetings anywhere we can find an organizer. Meanwhile, we’ll continue statewide on-line meetings every Friday at 5:30 PM.
