The Executive Board of the Dallas AFL-CIO unanimously chose Brother Lewis Fulbright as Secretary-Treasurer. He was nominated by Rena Honea of the school employees union, Alliance/AFT. Fulbright has led the Council's financial oversight and fund raising. He is a long-time labor leader from the American Postal Workers Union. He will replace Mark York who is retiring after leading a string of labor successes in Dallas County.
Wasting no time, Fulbright immediately put forward a number of financial changes to make sure that the Dallas Council is not distracted from its primary role of serving and strengthening working families. David Lopez, President of the Council, called for volunteers to get our Political Committee in full swing without delay.
Action Wednesday!
The AFL-CIO has set Wednesday, July 22, as National Call-In Day to force the U.S. Senate to consider HR6800, the HEROES Act, which passed in the House in May. The crisis-relief package is labor’s #1 priority.
Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions (HEROES) Act HR6800
- includes an emergency workplace infectious disease standard;
- gives aid for state and local governments, public schools, the U.S. Postal Service, and pension relief;
- keeps workers on payrolls to avoid mass layoffs;
- extends unemployment insurance; the present extension runs out at the end of July
- provides more direct payments to working people;
- extends health care coverage;
- provides housing and food benefits, and much more.
- extends democracy by providing money for safe voting during the pandemic
In America, in Texas, and in Dallas horrendous new Coronavirus records are being set every day. Store closures, evictions, and layoffs are rising. One of the worst announcements was American Airlines’ announcement of 25,000 new layoffs! The Senate must take action!
CWA Joins National Strike Day
The Communication Workers’ Newsletter announced, “On Monday, July 20th, CWA members will join with other union members at SEIU, the Teamsters, AFT, and community-based organizations to hold a National Strike/Day of Action for Black Lives.”
Workers are being asked to take a minimum of 8 minutes off work during the day. Public actions are taking place around the country. Activists in Dallas have called for a rally at 6PMat Belo Gardens Park, across the street from the Federal Building on Commerce. 1014 Main.
Ready for a Fight?
The Dallas AFL-CIO combines the efforts of working families to win all-important elections. We will work with Tarrant County AFL-CIO, Texas AFL-CIO, and National AFL-CIO. Our affiliated membership, considered alone, is enough to win many races.
National attention is being focused on Congressional District 24. This long-time Republican stronghold is listed by the Washington Post as one of the top ten “most changeable” districts.
