Creating Texas AFL-CIO Veterans Committee

WHEREAS, the population of military veterans who have served our nation with distinction has always been well-represented within the Texas AFL-CIO;

WHEREAS, from the inception of the Texas AFL-CIO veterans of World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the War in Vietnam, conflicts in the Middle East and other venues for military operations have lent their wisdom, perspective and leadership to the struggle to improve the lives of working families;

WHEREAS, our nation rightly celebrates the contributions of military veterans, including important benefits and a holiday honoring their service;

WHEREAS, our nation often falls short in providing the level of service to wounded veterans that they deserve;

WHEREAS, Veterans Administration hospitals are under-funded, and the White House is seeking to dictate a reduction in contract terms for VA hospital workers, many of whom are themselves both Veterans and union members represented by the American Federation of Government Employees;

WHEREAS, the State of Texas often considers legislation that directly affects the rights and opportunities of veterans;

 WHEREAS, the Texas AFL-CIO has committees that carry out important programs   within the Texas labor movement but has not created such a committee to represent the interests of veterans;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that delegates to the 60thTexas AFL-CIO Constitutional Convention approve creation of the Texas AFL-CIO Veterans Committee to work under the direction of the state federation and in close coordination with the National Union Veterans Council, AFL-CIO;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Texas AFL-CIO Veterans Committee shall participate in the national network of Veterans Committees established by the National Union Veterans Council, AFL-CIO; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that the primary mission of the Texas AFL-CIO Veterans Committee shall be to bring together Union members and retirees who are veterans to speak out and advocate on veterans’ issues that affect working families and the veterans’ community.
